Mission of program: Traverse Square’s mission is to facilitate and strengthen the relationship between members of the Wesleyan campus and those of the Middletown community. With the aim of having consistent one on one match ups between a Wesleyan student (tutor) and Traverse kid, Traverse Square provides a space for Wesleyan students to connect with and mentor kids from the Middletown community.
Description of program:
Traverse Square is a student-run and community based after school program located near the lo and hi rise student housing. The 4pm to 5pm time slot is dedicated to assisting the kids with their homework and the 5pm to 6pm time slot is dedicated to recreational play.
Age group served: 5-12
Time commitment: Center runs Monday-Thursday from 4pm-6pm. We ask our tutors to commit to at least two days a week, but they are of course welcome to do more. On most Fridays we also organize various trips and activities for the kids within and around the Wesleyan and Middletown community. For example, we currently coordinate with the Aquatics Director at the YMCA and arrange for swim lessons for the kids.
