SHOFCO Summer Institute

The Institute is a highly competitive program that provides deeply motivated and civic-minded college students with on-the-ground experience teaching at The Kibera School for Girls (KSG) in Nairobi, Kenya. KSG is a free school for girls in the Kibera slum, one of the largest slums in Africa.

You will engage in an intensive, structured volunteer experience, working at The Kibera School for Girls, a school for some of the most at-risk girls in the Kibera slum. American volunteers will partner with college-aged members of the Kibera community to run a fun, educational “summer camp” for the KSG students. In the mornings, Institute participants will provide our Pre-Kindergarten to 4th grade students with tutoring and mentoring—accelerating their academic performance while forming meaningful relationships. In the afternoons, Institute participants will take turns leading personally designed workshops on subjects of their choice. Past lessons have ranged from poetry to soccer, public speaking to arts & crafts, volcano making to ballet. Volunteers will be on-site at the Kibera School for Girls Monday through Friday from 7:30am – 5pm. On weekends, Kenyan and American participants will take part in group activities, explore Nairobi, and travel outside the city.
