Independently provides direct research, statistical, writing and administrative support to the Senior Fellow and Brown Center Director, specializing in US education policy.


Minimum bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a social science.  Minimum two years of work experience and a demonstrated ability to do independent scholarly work of publishable quality.  Experience conducting quantitative research required. Must have generated a bachelor’s thesis or master’s dissertation, and/or been a significant contributor to a publication or report involving data analysis. Experience using and applying statistical software (such as STATA, SAS, or SPSS).

60% Quantitative Research

  • Conducts statistical analyses to guide research efforts.
  • Prepares and independently analyzes data using statistical packages and database tools.

20% Project Management

  • Manages research applications, coordinates with data providers, writes and edits reports, and correspondence; coordinates with partnering institutions when necessary.

  • Conducts research and literature searches on relevant topics; reads sources for relevancy to research themes.
  • Collects and analyzes information; assembles material including press reports, interviews, government data, documents, seminars, and reports from a wide variety of sources including library and internet searches, the local media, NGOs, journalists, diplomats, and others in the field.
  • Writes briefing memos and synthesizes research materials; prepares notes and reports on meetings and conferences; compiles abstracts, summaries, bibliographies, chronologies, and analyses of books and articles.
  • Independently analyzes research findings to be incorporated into published materials. Occasionally co-authors work.
  • Monitors current developments in relevant research areas.
  • Maintains an active network of research and collaborative partners in the education community to stay current in the research areas.

The Brown Center on Education Policy within the Governance Studies Program at the Brookings Institution is accepting applications for a Fellow with a strong background in quantitative research relevant to education policy. Under the supervision of the Director of the Brown Center, the Fellow will conduct research, writing, and outreach tasks related to his or her individual scholarship as well as to collaborative projects within the Brown Center.  The Fellow will also raise money for research projects and interact with the media.  The focus of the Brown Center is bringing the best evidence to bear on governmental decisions that affect policy and practice within the American education system from preschool to postsecondary.

Education/Experience Requirements

The successful candidate will hold a PhD by December 30, 2014 in economics, public policy, psychology, political science, or a related discipline, or have completed all requirements for the PhD with the expectation that the candidate will obtain the PhD within six (6) months of starting at Brookings. He/she will have a record of publications based on quantitative research on topics of relevance to education policy, a history of involvement in projects funded through external grants, and evidence of communication skills suitable to the role of a public intellectual at Brookings.

A candidate may blend academic excellence with experience in the public, private, or academic sectors. The individual must have the ability to conduct state-of-the-art quantitative research, engage in outreach in order to affect public policy, and obtain grant funding.

Salary will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and experience, and will be commensurate with experience. Starting date is negotiable; however, filling the position by the Summer of 2014 is preferred.

RANYCS Communications and Operations Intern

Job Description

The Research Alliance for New York City Schools, an independent research center housed in the Steinhardt School of Education at NYU, is looking for a Fall intern to support projects in communications. This is a fall internship with the possibility of extension through the academic year. It requires a commitment of 15 work hours per week, including every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30pm – 5pm. Other hours are flexible!

All internships are structured as learning opportunities that will include the chance to participate in internal and external staff meetings, contribute to important Research Alliance projects, and build work experience and professional networks in the field of education policy. This internship also includes 9 hours per week of administrative duties, which will be compensated with a stipend at the end of the internship period equivalent to $10 for each hour spent covering the front desk (approximately $90/week).

Internship Areas and Potential Projects


  • Support launch of “Breakfast Briefings” series designed to engage a small group of influential stakeholders around new publications and work in progress.
    • Prepare promotional materials for Briefings, organize presentation materials, and write follow-up reports.
    • Handle logistics such as invitations, guest lists, and working with vendors.
  • Redesign and update staff section of the Research Alliance website.
    • Develop new concept and design for staff biography section of the website in order to engage visitors and highlight staff accomplishments.
    • Research and interview staff, then write updated biographies based on interviews.

Junior Research Analysts will work under the general supervision of the Data Manager and Research Associates.


  • Work with Data Manager to develop, maintain, and document data collection, processing, storage, retrieval, and analytic systems for the Research Alliance data archive consisting of multi-level and longitudinal data sets from the New York City Department of Education and other sources.
  • Work closely with Research Associates and project managers to clarify data specifications for rigorous research and evaluation designs and to prepare analytic data files that meet those specifications.
  • Retrieve and process data from Research Alliance’s data archives and compile complex analytical datasets for research projects.
  • Assist with developing and documenting institutional algorithms for procedures such as matching study participants to Research Alliance data archives when standard IDs are not available.
  • Prepare clear data processing narratives for reports and papers on research findings.
  • Perform other research support work, such as preparing literature reviews, creating graphical representations of data, summarizing results of analyses, documenting procedures, etc.

Agency Description: The New York City school system is the largest in the country, composed of approximately 1.1 million students and 75,000+ teachers in over 1,700+ schools. In January 2003, the Department of Education (DOE) launched Children First: A New Agenda for Public Schools in New York City, a multi-year reform effort aimed at significantly improving student achievement through effective teaching and learning.

Office Description:

Research-based educational policy and data transparency are essential elements of the Children’s First reform. The Research and Policy Support Group (RPSG) is at the center of this effort as a primary source of data analysis and research for the DOE.  The RPSG both conducts its own research and analyses to inform DOE policy, as well as consults on and supports others’ analytic work with DOE data including external researchers through the Institutional Review Board (IRB).


RPSG is currently evaluating several programs that are focused on improving academic outcomes for Black & Latino boys in a variety of school settings. These process and impact evaluations include qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. RPSG is seeking an intern to work across several projects, supporting the implementation of the evaluations, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis and results dissemination.


Position Reports to: Program Evaluation Manager, Research and Policy Support Group


Internship Responsibilities:

  • Develop evaluation instruments, including surveys and focus group guides.
  • Attend and possibly conduct interview and focus groups with school staff and students.
  • Transcribe qualitative interviews conducted with school personnel on a variety of topics.
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Write results for a variety of programmatic stakeholders.

EMPLOYER: New York University, in partnership with MDRC

New York University, in partnership with MDRC, seeks to hire a College Match advisor to help eligible low-income, higher-performing high school students realize their college ambitions.

The advisor will lead approximately 50-100 high school seniors in one comprehensive New York City Department of Education high school through the entire college search, application, financial aid, and decision-making process with the goal of helping students enroll in “match” four-year colleges and universities where they are likely to thrive and graduate. The advisor’s primary responsibilities will include:

  • Information sharing and awareness building: Building knowledge among students and their families around general application strategies, financial aid, and the concept of a “match” college. Providing exposure to more selective colleges through a combination of tours and events.
  • Individualized advising: Helping students identify best fit colleges among an appropriately matched set of colleges and universities based on their individual interests and abilities and developing a competitive academic record.
  • Supporting the application process: Helping students navigate the administrative aspects of the college application process, including: developing competitive applications and essays, procuring fee waivers, and supporting timely completion of the FAFSA.
  • Decision-making and planning ahead: Helping students choose between multiple acceptances and financial aid awards. Preparing for college life and planning for a smooth transition.

The position requires tact, diplomacy, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to service.  The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to collaborate creatively and effectively with others in order to solve problems and reach goals.  Successful candidates will also demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills, including the ability to listen carefully and to write and speak persuasively.  Candidates who are fluent in Spanish and/or who have experience advising high school students about the college admissions process are encouraged to apply. The College Match advisor will report to the MDRC program liaison and to an on-site supervisor in the high school they will serve. The advisor will join a team of one other College Match advisor and will collaborate with sixteen members of the New York College Advising Corp (NYCAC).

The College Match advisor will be expected to tailor programs and activities to meet the specific needs of their assigned schools and perform the following primary functions:

1. Provide individualized admission and financial aid guidance to students and families participating in the College Match Program

  • Encourage each student to consider appropriate “match” colleges and universities
  • Develop with each student a comprehensive college search and application timeline, including application deadlines for admission and financial aid
  • Help each student and their family complete and submit admission applications and federal, state, and institutional aid applications
  • Assist each student in interpreting correspondence from colleges, including offers of admission and financial aid
  • Help each student identify scholarships for which they are eligible and prepare competitive applications

2. Establish productive working relationships with principals and school staff in each partner high school

  • Assess, in consultation with the College Match Program liaison and school personnel, the particular needs of each school, and adapt programs and activities to meet these needs
  • Actively seek the advice and counsel of the on-site supervisor at each partner high school

3. Collaborate with College Match and NYCAC advisors

  • Help organize, provide support  for, and attend evening and weekend events organized by other advisors
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and additional meetings to share best practices, troubleshoot and share experiences

4. Assist in the assessment and long-term sustainability of the College Match Program

  • Assist the program director and evaluation staff to identify and collect key progress and outcome data to evaluate the effectiveness of the College Match Program
  • Submit monthly progress reports to the program director  documenting progress and outcome data
  • Meet, as appropriate, with members of the MDRC research team
  • Represent the College Match Program, as requested by the program director, in meetings with potential supporters and other interested parties

5. Maintain expertise in admissions and financial-aid advising

  • Participate in all scheduled trainings
  • In consultation with the program director, seek out and participate in additional opportunities for professional development

The appointment will begin on August 1, 2013, and will end on July 31, 2014. The position is full-time and is based in New York City.  Annual compensation is commensurate with experience. Health insurance provided through New York University.

This summer, I am working as an intern in curriculum development with Ascend Learning . Ascend is a Brooklyn-based network of charter schools and will be opening up two new schools for the 13-14 school year, which will bring the total number of schools in the network to six. Ascend’s mission is college readiness for all of its students, which it seeks to achieve by holding students to high standards both behaviorally and academically.

The team I am working with is focused on developing the Humanities and Social Studies programs. The work began with my providing support in the sixth grade classrooms, along with a few other interns, throughout the month of June, while students were still in school. We would come around to students’ desks to offer one-on-one support for their end-of-the-year writing assignments. There was also a lot of grading, proofreading, and writing comments for writing portfolios that was done to help the teachers with the final push during the last couple weeks of school. Being in the classroom was a great opportunity to gain a sense of the culture of Ascend’s classrooms, see the level of work students were producing, and get to know some great kids. Now, as part of the curriculum team, I am helping to prepare materials – lesson plans, flip charts, unit guides, etc. – for the upcoming school year, specifically for the seventh grade, since this coming year will be the first year seventh grade will be offered. This is because the students that began with Ascend in its first year will now be entering seventh grade.

I have observed a lot of detail-oriented planning, such as going over the academic calendar to decide which lessons will be taught on which days. However, there is also a lot of bigger-picture strategizing that I have become involved in. Examples of this include discussion about how to draw connections across disciplines and research about different approaches to developing strong writers.

As a sociology major, I became particularly interested in issues surrounding education and explored them further by choosing courses oriented towards education and doing research about current education policy issues while at Wesleyan. My internship with Ascend has definitely provided me with an opportunity to learn more about charter schools and observe first-hand certain aspects of the discussion surrounding charter schools that I have been reading about for the past few years
