Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO)

Mission of program: Our non-profit organization is geared towards fighting intergenerational cycles of poverty and gender inequality in the slum of Kibera, by connecting our tuition-free school for girls with other community-driven social services developed by SHOFCO in Kibera.

Description of program: Our Wesleyan chapter both fundraises (through events and donations) for the Kibera School for Girls, and other social service projects in Kibera, and also plans events tailored towards raising awareness in the Wesleyan and Middletown community on specific issues areas (including poverty, gender inequality, the power of education, HIV/AIDs, slums, etc).

Age group served: The school is currently pre-kindergarten to 4th grade, and will continue to grow until 8th grade (after which SHOFCO will find and fund higher education for its students).

Time commitment: At Wesleyan, the time commitment is flexible, and is dependent upon how involved each student wants to become. SHOFCO-Wes holds weekly meetings.

How to get involved: To get involved on campus, contact the Student Coordinator through the Office of Community Service.
